Keeping My Kids Healthy All Year Long
Yesterday I realized that it doesn't matter what time of the year it is, there is always something going around that will make my kids sick. I started to think of ways I could improve their ability to keep healthy.
Getting Enough Sleep
When my children were younger, it was easy to make sure they got enough sleep every night. Now that they are older, it has become a lot more difficult to get them to bed on time. That means that at least once or twice a week they are getting less than the 10 (that's right) hours of sleep they need to maintain good health and the ability to concentrate well at school. A good night's sleep also allows for body repair and builds the health of the immune system. Set out school clothes; get that Ecko t-shirt out the night before.
Healthy Eating
I plan nutritious meals daily, but our busy schedules sometimes undermine my best efforts to feed my children foods that build their ability to fight off disease. It is just so easy to grab a donut or other less-that-wholesome food to start the day. I have discovered many foods that are both fast and healthy for those days that are way too hectic (more about hectic days later). Fruit, whole-grain toast topped with nut butter, or a hard-boiled egg can contribute to good health on the busiest of mornings.
Less is More
Sometimes we are all just too busy. If your family stress level seems to be rising, sit down together and look for ways to get things back on track. Families can lower stress levels by making sure they have enough time to just sit and contemplate the nature of the universe or something similar. Limit the number of extracurricular activities each member of the family is involved in. Make time for family time.

Don't Give Up the Mikimoto Jewelry Just Because You're a Parent
A lot of times, new parents are worried that they will have to give up so many things because of their new little ones. Many women feel that they need to put away all the jewelry and makeup and pull out the sweats until their child is much older. Not only that, but they feel that shopping trips, days out with their friends, and even dates with their husbands are all going to go by the wayside. Luckily, you will quickly find that, though you may want to keep it in your jewelry box for the most part, you definitely don't have to give up that beautiful Mikimoto necklace your husband gave you last year.
Sure, some things will need to change once you have kids. You won't be able to go out at the spur of the moment. Things like vacations will need to be more carefully planned, and even going out to dinner and a movie might take a little bit of advance notice. This does not mean that these thing need to, or should, completely disappear from your life. Just because you have a child does not mean that you are no longer a person yourself. You may not be able to wear pearls every day (or the baby might just think they are a teething ring), but pulling them out for a night on the town with the girls is completely justifiable.
No matter what is in your life that's important to you, make sure that you don't give these things up just because you have a child. Cutting back may end up happening, but there is no need to give up who you are just to be your child's parent.

Making Money With a Blog
Many people online nowadays choose to blog as a way to make extra money. Whether you want to make some extra cash or make enough money to become a blogger full time, blogging can be a great choice for you. There are a number of ways you can turn your blog into a money-making enterprise.
One way to make money on a blog is by applying to a paid blogging network. Here you can write pre-approved posts on various topics that advertisers have selected for you in order to promote their products. When the blog post is up, thus gaining the company additional exposure, you will receive your money. There are many different networks and for each one you will have to fill out an application. Here you will have to give the details of your blog and include the kind of subjects that will fit well in your blog. After all, an advertiser dealing with Long Beach property management is not going to want to advertise their company on a blog about cars.
Similarly, you can also write paid reviews for advertisers on your blog regarding various products the company is launching. Obviously, part of the agreement is that you have to say you like the product in order to get money, but this can be a great way to make extra cash.
You can also make money by putting advertising on your blog itself. Banner ads are often popular and work by generating you income for every person that clicks on the ad. The more visitors you have to your blog, then the more likely you are to make some money from your ads as there will be more people clicking on them. You should be careful to only put up ads that are relevant to your blog and it topics.

They are still processed food to me, but if you will let you kids eat them be sure to give them in moderate amount. Just my two cents...
Using Games and Halloween Costumes to Entertain Kids
Being a stay-at-home mom gives you the gift of spending a lot of precious time with your children. It's such a great experience to be so involved in their lives and really watch them grow. Sometimes, though, you find yourselves at home with nothing to do. The good news is that kids are easily entertained, but the bad news is that it usually doesn't last long. This can make entertaining them a challenge, but it also gives you a chance to become a creative mom.
In today's digital world, it's easy to think of board games as being out dated. But you would be surprised by how taken kids can be towards them. Consider that they involve friendly (well, usually) competition, physical interaction and lots of fun. Not to mention most take a while to complete, and if your kids are having fun they'll want to play all over again.
One thing parents unfortunately tend to do on occasion is underestimate their children. This is especially true when it comes to helping around the house. While no kid will be entertained by vacuuming the living room, there are other chores that can be quite exciting for the whole family. The best example is cooking. Obviously, it is one chore that demands kids to get messy. But is also one that is rewarding since they get to eat the fruits of their labor.
At times you just run the gamut of all the things to do at home with your kids, and so have to resort to some creative and rather wacky solutions. For example, if your kids are relatively young, try dressing up in Halloween costumes and pretending that all of you are out trick-or-treating in a scary neighborhood. A classic solution is building a fort using blankets and chairs. Successfully entertaining your kids at home is another way to be one super mom.

The Best Ways to Compare Auto Insurance Prices
Everyone knows that major auto insurance companies such as Geico and Progressive offer price comparison services. One has to wonder, though, how accurate this insurance information really is. After all, would a company like Geico really publicize another insurance provider’s lower prices? That seems unlikely.
It is possible that these price comparisons services really do provide accurate information. Perhaps the companies rely on promises of better service to justify variations in price. Regardless, it makes sense for consumers to do their own research. That way they know for sure that they are comparing accurate information.
Most insurance companies make it relatively easy to get quotes from their websites. You just need basic information to find out approximately how much a policy will cost. Before using company websites to get price quotes, be sure to have information pertaining to
Your driving record
The make and model of the vehicle
An up-to-date address
Your license number
Having this information available before you visit the sites will help you get quotes quickly.
If you feel pressed for time, though, then you might not feel like requested price quotes from numerous websites. In this case, you can use third-party price comparisons. There are several websites that let you compare auto insurance prices instantly. You only have to answer the questions once rather than over and over again.
There is still a question of trust when it comes to using these sites. After all, how do you know that they are truly third-party websites without affiliations to any auto insurance companies? Couldn’t Progressive or Safe Auto open a website that doesn’t mention their ownership? Of course they could. That’s why it is smart to keep your wits about you and pay attention to the sites you use. If you have time, do research on your own. If not, then at least use a reliable source.

Children in conflict with the law
I just want to share some photos I dug up from my desktop. ;-)
There are too many Children in Conflict with the Law who are presently housed in various government rehab centers. Their cases range from petty crimes to offenses punishable by long term imprisonment. I don't have figures to share as to the exact number of CICLs in government centers. Enough to know that young people commit crimes and their number is alarming.
Maybe it's about time we check on our children too. Have time to talk with them and know what's going in their young lives. Let them know that they have someone to talk to at home and they are loved as any member of your family.
Here's Miss Jane Abello of the Department of Social Welfare and Development - National Capital Region giving some pointers to EDWIN (not his real name) at the Manila Youth Reception Center Manila.
All three photos were taken by PJI photographer Ver Noveno.

Don't Worry—Sometimes Children Regress
Sometimes, raising kids can feel like online casino games. At times it is easy, and everything seems to be going your way. Then, all of a sudden—BAM! You start to lose everything you've won. Many times as our children grow, they regress to different points. For example, when you are potty training, you may find that you are making amazing progress. Your child is going to the bathroom on the potty all day, and doing great. Then, all of a sudden, one day they start having accidents again. This feels like a losing hand that you bet it all on. Don't get discouraged, though. This is a common problem; almost all parents have to deal with it. Just keep working on the potty training, and eventually it will stick.
Sleeping through the night and dealing with the dark are two other areas that can feel like a winning situation, then all of a sudden you find out you are losing. Most kids will sleep through the night just fine once they reach a certain age. There will generally be periods through their development, though, that they decide that they would rather wake up.
Dealing with the dark is the same thing. For the longest time, your child may be fine with the dark, and then one day they tell you that they are afraid of the dark again. This can be a frustrating situation to deal with as a parent, and you may even need to resort to something like a night light for a while. These things are all normal, and though they may be stressful, you will soon find yourself "winning" again in the struggles of parenthood. Don't give up, and remember to tell yourself that it is just a phase. Your child will get past the hurdles.

Finding Your Color Season
It’s time to go shopping and you’ve decided to make sure that you are going to choose the most flattering clothes during this shopping spree. The kids are going to be with their dad, exploring the latest video game or sports betting sites for a bit of fun and excitement, so you’ll have plenty of time to choose just the right outfits. It's a good idea to determine which colors look best on you before hitting the mall. Finding the right color season can dramatically change your look and even how you feel!
First, consider your skin’s undertone. Without makeup, hold a piece of white paper next to your face. If possible, do this in natural light. Undertones are as follows:
Next, examine your eye pattern. Because you’ll be looking at your eyes a little differently, you may discover something new. Each season has a different eye pattern. Using a bright light, determine your eye pattern by looking at your irises.
Other factors to take into consideration are both your hair and eye colors.
And here are the colors that are best suited for each season:
Now, go enjoy your shopping spree, confident that you can find clothes to compliment your appearance. Happy shopping!

It was a privileged to meet in person the grand dame of Philippine radio, Tiya Dely Magpayo, in 2001. Below is the story of that interview.
Tiya Dely is gone but she will continue to live in the hearts of so many people whose lives she has touched one way or another...

What your favorite color tells about you
My kids' wardrobe include mostly colored shirts and denim jeans. Of late, my daughter wants to wear blue shirts. My son, on the other hand, loves green shirt. I don't have many photos of them wearing their favorite blue or green shirt except these two latest pictures here.

What happened in my birth year
I saw this from Mommy Kat of Mom's Place through Google Reader and thought of sharing my own "birthday trivia".
In 1970, the world was a different place.
There was no Google yet. Or Yahoo.
In 1970, the year of your birth, the top selling movie was Love Story. People buying the popcorn in the cinema lobby had glazing eyes when looking at the poster.
Remember, that was before there were DVDs. Heck, even before there was VHS. People were indeed watching movies in the cinema, and not downloading them online. Imagine the packed seats, the laughter, the excitement, the novelty. And mostly all of that without 3D computer effects.
Do you know who won the Oscars that year? The academy award for the best movie went to Patton. The Oscar for best foreign movie that year went to Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion. The top actor was George C. Scott for his role as Gen. George S. Patton Jr. in Patton. The top actress was Glenda Jackson for her role as Gudrun Brangwen in Women in Love. The best director? Franklin J. Schaffner for Patton.
In the year 1970, the time when you arrived on this planet, books were still popularly read on paper, not on digital devices. Trees were felled to get the word out. The number one US bestseller of the time was Love Story by Erich Segal. Oh, that's many years ago. Have you read that book? Have you heard of it? Look at the cover!
In 1970... The first episode of All My Children is broadcast on the ABC television network. Biafra capitulates, ending the Nigerian civil war. The Boeing 747, the world's first "jumbo jet", enters commercial service for launch customer Pan American Airways with its maiden voyage from John F Kennedy International Airport to London Heathrow Airport. Mick Jagger is fined £200 for possession of cannabis. The complete New English Bible is published. The Expo '70 World's Fair opens in Suita, Osaka, Japan. Citroën introduces the SM at the Geneva Auto Salon. Teenagers in the United Kingdom vote for the first time, in a by-election in Bridgwater. Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh opens. The 1970 FIFA World Cup is inaugurated in Mexico. An assassination attempt against King Hussein of Jordan precipitates the Black September crisis. The U.S. Foreign Office announces that renewal of arms sales to Pakistan. Democrats sweep the U.S. Congressional midterm elections; Ronald Reagan is reelected governor of California; Jimmy Carter is elected governor of Georgia. Paul McCartney sues in Great Britain to dissolve the Beatles' legal partnership.
That was the world you were born into. Since then, you and others have changed it.
The Nobel prize for Literature that year went to Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. The Nobel Peace prize went to Norman E. Borlaug. The Nobel prize for physics went to Hannes Olof Gösta Alfvén from Sweden for fundamental work and discoveries in magneto-hydrodynamics with fruitful applications in different parts of plasma physics. The sensation this created was big. But it didn't stop the planets from spinning, on and on, year by year. Years in which you would grow bigger, older, smarter, and, if you were lucky, sometimes wiser. Years in which you also lost some things. Possessions got misplaced. Memories faded. Friends parted ways. The best friends, you tried to hold on. This is what counts in life, isn't it?
The 1970s were indeed a special decade. Women's liberation continued. The hippie culture faded. There was an opposition to the Vietnam war, and nuclear weapons. The environmentalist movement began. Tom Wolfe coined the decade the "Me decade" due to a new self-awareness. Mao Zedong died and the market began to liberate in China. There was an oil crisis. After the first oil shock, gasoline was rationed in many countries. In Eastern Europe, Soviet-style command economies begin showing signs of stagnation. The Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, witness the kidnapping and murder of Israeli athletes by Palestinian Arab terrorists. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. The Who, Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Bee Gees, Abba and others play their music. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison all die at the age of 27. The space mission Apollo 13 nearly ends in disaster. Egypt signed the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty. There was a revolution in Iran. The world sees its first general microprocessor. The C programming language makes its debut. Consumer video games show up on the scene. Microwave ovens become commercially available. Margaret Thatcher was victorious in the UK elections.
Do you know what was on the cover of Life that year?
Do you remember the movie that was all the rage when you were 15? Rocky IV. Do you still remember the songs playing on the radio when you were 15? Maybe it was Everybody Wants to Rule the World by Tears for Fears. Were you in love? Who were you in love with, do you remember?
In 1970, 15 years earlier, a long time ago, the year when you were born, the song I'll Be There by The Jackson 5 topped the US charts. Do you know the lyrics? Do you know the tune? Sing along.
You and I must make a pact, we must bring salvation back
Where there is love, I'll be there
I'll reach out my hand to you, I'll have faith in all you do
Just call my name and I'll be there
...
There's a kid outside, shouting, playing. It doesn't care about time. It doesn't know about time. It shouts and it plays and thinks time is forever. You were once that kid.
When you were 9, the movie The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh was playing. When you were 8, there was The Cat from Outer Space. When you were 7, there was a Disney movie out called The Rescuers. Does this ring a bell?
6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... it's 1970. There's TV noise coming from the second floor. Someone turned up the volume way too high. The sun is burning from above. These were different times. The show playing on TV is Josie and the Pussycats. The sun goes down. Someone switches channels. There's The Partridge Family on now. That's the world you were born in.
Progress, year after year. Do you wonder where the world is heading towards? The technology available today would have blown your mind in 1970. Do you know what was invented in the year you were born? The Pocket Calculator. The Relational Database Management System. Cup Noodles.
It's 2003 and where do you wanna be? In '42 or 1970?
And maybe we should take a good lock around
I don't get why the planet is so upset
And don't do something you might regret
I'm telling you it's starting to get in the way
...
That's from the song Fun by Smash Mouth.
In 1970, a new character entered the world of comic books: Aquarius. Bang! Boom! But that's just fiction, right? In the real world, in 1970, Beck was born. And Matt Damon. Uma Thurman, too. And you, of course. Everyone an individual. Everyone special. Everyone taking a different path through life.
It's 2010.
The world is a different place.
What path have you taken?

I hope you had fun reading this awesome game(?). I feel like I was taken back to the year I was born through this trivia. I've learned so many interesting details, all part of history now.

Happy birthday Sofia Ananta!
Sati, my inaanak, the popular kid of Marce Pehpot, just turned one year old today (Nov. 8). The birthday celebration was held in advance last Saturday at Jollibee Roosevelt in San Juan. Invited guests and blogger friends came in with their kids wearing Tinkerbell, Peter Pan and Pirate-inspired costumes. My kids made it to Sati's special day, too. Too bad they don't have any picture with Sati. We also missed many of Sati's Ninangs who were not present during the occasion. Hope to see you guys soon.
Happy birthday, Sati!
May God continue to bless you, sweet child.

Colicky baby
I’m glad I don’t have to worry about it anymore since my children are big now. My kids were not spared from common baby problems such as kids’ indigestion, infants and gas, baby acid and all that reasons that cause babies to become fussy at night. My kids were basically quiet babies; they cry when hungry or need to change diapers. One time, my son who was a few months old, started crying for no apparent reason. I carry him for hours to calm him down. But even local remedies (camphor oil to massage the abdomen) known to my parents didn’t help to stop my baby from crying. It turned out our helper forgot to burp my son after feeding him. The result, the poor baby ends up with upset stomach causing him to cry nonstop that night.
Colicky babies nowadays can be calmed right away by Colic Calm Homeopathic Medicine. This is a natural remedy that ensures relief fast. It has a pleasant taste and stimulates the baby’s self-healing properties. Aside from addressing colic, the medicine relieves hiccups and soothes stomach upset caused by increased saliva production during teething. I would have given my kids this easy cure if I have known this or heard about it then.

A tale of two grandmothers
I met two grandmothers at the Home for the Aged in December 2006. The first grandmother who was about 80 years old today used to live an affluent life. She owned and managed a garment business that helped her support her children's needs until they settle down and raise their own families. When this granny could no longer function well she was forced to close down her business. No one will take care of her so she was sent to the Home for the Aged. At first, her children would visit her and provide her basic needs at the nursing home. She rarely saw her family now. She looks at their pictures when she feels lonely and recalls their happy moments together when she couldn't sleep at night.
The other grandmother was blinded by old age. She was not lucky to have a child of her own, but someone took care of her and loved her as his own mother. I don’t quite remember why she was turn over to the institution by the young man. But the man still visits the old woman and brings her her favorite food. The granny is more than 90 when I met her. She had difficulty hearing. Grandma one and Grandma two don’t have their real families to comfort them, but they have each other and the nursing staff to take care of them. Many old persons like them are now staying in various nursing homes. I hope their loved ones will be able to remember to visit them even for this Christmas season.
