If you're a mom, you know how fast kids go through shoes. It seems like once they hit the age where they are able to go outside and play on their own, you can't keep a decent pair of shoes on their feet. So, what options do you have? You either purchase cheap shoes because you know your kid will need another pair in a month, or you buy more expensive ones and hope they last longer. So, is it better to spend more or less?
The truth is kids outgrow shoes fast. However, many kids tear their shoes up before they even get a chance to outgrow them. Before you run out and buy new shoes, it helps to take a look at how your children treat the pairs they already have. Simple things that kids don't think about tear shoes up. Is your daughter stopping her bike with her feet? Does your son play a lot of sports? All these things affect how long your child's shoes last. If your child does things that will tear his sneakers up fast, then talk to him about it. More than likely, he doesn't even realize he's doing it, and maybe he can stop. If your kids are gentle with their shoes, it may be worth spending more money on higher-quality shoes that will last longer.
Since old habits Since old habits die hard, you're probably still going to go through many pairs of shoes. However, keeping their old ones as long as possible saves you some money. Make sure you child always has one pair of tennis shoes to play in and a nice pair to wear to school or when you have to go out. Tearing up play shoes doesn't matter as much. If your daughter has a pair that remains nice, you won't feel the need to run out and buy a new pair every month.

Not in good shape
Hubby and his two older brothers are planning to visit their sick mother in General Santos. We just received the bad news. My mother-in-law who is battling a number of age-related sickness, is not in good shape. I hate to say this but my sister-in-law said their mom is hanging on to dear life...maybe waiting to see her three other children in Manila to come home and be with her in her final days...
When A Stay At Home Mom Turns to a Cash Advance
If you're like myself, you are probably a stay at home mom (or dad). Choosing this path in life is truly a rewarding experience. You get to stay at home with your family and experience all those important milestones such as first steps, first words and other major goals in a child's life.
No matter how rewarding this lifestyle is, sometimes the unexpected can happen. An unexpected doctor's visit, a car repair, ora home maintenance cost can pop out of nowhere and sometimes the money just isn't there. After checking to see if there are any available credit cards that I can use or seeing if I can borrow the money from friends or family, I turn to what I call my last resort, a cash advance.
Cash advances are a wonderful fall back for those times when unexpected expenses appear. I use them only as a last resort because, depending upon the place that I use the cash advance, interest rate can be very high and cause you to pay a lot more on the money that you are being advanced. That is why a cash advance is usually my last resort for an emergency money supply.
If you are a stay at home parent and deciding if a cash advance is right for your situation, here are a few things that I take into account before taking an advance.
1. Can you get the money anywhere else such as a credit card, a family member, or even selling items at a pawn shop or on ebay?
2. Can the expense wait until payday?
3. How often have I used a cash advance?
4. Can I pay it back in a reasonable time?
As long as you think it through and use a cash advance responsibly, you'll be able to get that little added help when an unexpected expense comes out of nowhere.

Job Opportunities for the Stay-at-Home Mom
If you're a stay-at-home mom who would like to add to the family's income, there are plenty of online jobs that could put anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars in your pocket each month. With the economy in its current state, a second income could add to your family's feeling of security. You could make money in your spare time while you continue to stay at home with your children by using the internet.
Many companies from retail stores to automotive insurance providers are hiring customer service representatives to work from home. These telecommuting positions would involve the stay-at-home mom receiving phone calls that are routed to their home and helping the customer on the end of the line. Sometimes, they'll have a question about a product or service. At other times, they may need assistance navigating the company's website.
Virtual assistants are in high demand. Many people can't afford a full-time secretary, but could use someone to handle appointment setting and paperwork. A virtual assistant usually provides these types of services for several people on a part-time basis. Most communication is done through email with the rare phone call. Virtual assistants rarely meet their clients in person.
Freelance transcription services are also growing in popularity. Information is recorded and transferred to the transcriptionist's computer through the internet. The transcriptionist listens to the recording and creates a written copy.
The beauty of these jobs is that most of them will allow you to set your own hours and work from the comfort of your home. While the kids are napping or off at school, you could be making a little pocket money for your family's next vacation or to pay off that extra bill. Although the examples listed here are popular ways to make extra money at home, the possibilities are virtually endless.

Wine and health
I’m not a big wine drinker. I get to sip red wine once in a while. We have three bottles of red wine in the fridge, two still unopened. My husband got them as Christmas (previous) present from his friends. He started drinking red wine, just half full of ordinary drinking glass, when he was diagnosed with high level of cholesterol. I know red wine is not a cure, but it helps raise the amount of good cholesterol in the body.
I have no idea where the best wines come from. However, a little research made on wine told me that plonkwinemerchants.com sells the Best Cheap Wine. Plonk Wine Merchant is founded by Los Angeles native Etty Lewensztain. They are selling wines from around the globe and are priced at $30 or below. The wines are sort according to organic and biodynamic class. They are considered "diamonds in the rough” because you can’t find them in other retail wine stores.
Wine lovers can browse their wine selection by regions, but at present they only ship to the following states: Alaska, California, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, Washington DC, and Wyoming. If you come from one of the said areas your order will be delivered right at your doorstep.
We are aware of the health benefits of red wine, don’t we? But we still have to watch our wine or liquor intake this Holiday season to avoid any untoward incident. Remember the adage ‘everything in moderation, nothing to excess’.

My classic look in the early 90's
Hair-sprayed bangs and shoulder pads. This is my classic look when I was in college. My classmate and friend Lanie took this shot sometime in 1990 while we were taking pictures using my (first and only) SLR (Yashica) camera at the Quezon City Circle for our project.
Role of family in drug treatment
What will you do if someone in your family needs help because of drug addiction? Will you entrust him to police authorities for safekeeping or send him to a rehabilitation center right away? I'm sure it will be difficult for you to decide especially if the person who needs medical attention does not cooperate. Normally, drug users do not welcome the efforts of people who want to help them. They usually deny that they need help or how bad their addiction can be.
Drug Rehabilitation Today, a site that offers assistance and counseling for drug users, points out the role of family in addiction intervention. Drug dependents will feel at ease if family members are the ones who will give advice to them. The love and concern of the family members will help them come to terms with their addiction and encourage them to seek immediate treatment.
Family members who will conduct the intervention should be assisted and guided by a professional interventionist. The role of experienced interventionist is important because he or she is knowledgeable about the different methods of addiction interventions.
Meantime, the site also encourages former drug users and practitioners to share their personal experiences with them. The real stories of recovery are intended to save lives and inspire drug dependents to seek treatment.

Excited for Fall TV and Glee!
This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of TiVo. All opinions are 100% mine.
My daughter is excited to watch the second season of Glee which will be aired tomorrow in the Philippines. She is excited to see Charice Pempengco belt-out hit songs with her popular co-stars. If you missed an episode in the first season, do not despair because you can still catch up and stay up to date with your favorite Fall TV premieres through TiVo Premiere. I also have a lot of catching up to do since I haven’t watched a single episode of Glee.
Aside from new shows, I'm sure you will also enjoy TiVo's current offering, a Slide remote that makes watching web video, TV and movies more convenient than before. The peanut-shaped remote control is user-friendly. It has QWERTY keyboard for easy text entry for Search, YouTube, RSS and a lot more. It has more powerful signal, built-in Bluetooth and light sensor that activates glow feature in the keyboard if in case you use it in a dark room.
You can have a free TiVo remote if you Enter to Win their "30 Slides in 30 Days" Sweepstakes which will end on the Sept. 22. Be sure that you’re included in the TiVo Facebook Fan Page to be updated on this promo and for premier announcements.

Two moms lost their battle with cancer
I feel sad for the loss of two mothers to cancer.
Last week, my daughter came home from school with a sad news. Her classmate Shella lost her mom to cancer. I have not met the lady in person, but I think she was the one who accompanied Shella on stage to receive her medal and certificates during the last recognition program in school…She was a picture of a happy and proud mom to Shella...
It is not easy to cope with the grief and loss of a loved one....but I hope Shella and her family will have enough strength to carry on...
The other mom was a former colleague whose kids are almost the same age as mine. I was able to confirm from another colleague that Marie Surbano died of cervical cancer. I have no idea that she was ill because I was out of the mainstream for quite a long time. I learned about Marie’s untimely demise through a friend’s status in Facebook. Marie and I are not that close but we used to share stories about our kids when we had the chance to chat while covering our beat. She used to cover the health, Comelec, CBCP and Labor beat…
So long Marie. I know that you are in God's hands now...

Skylab
Are you familiar with Skylab? The US Space Laboratory that plunged to earth in 1979?
I was in Grade 3 when my teacher told us that whoever could get a genuine debris Skylab will be paid thousands or millions of dollars by the US government. I was hoping and even praying that a Skylab debris would land in our backyard so I could spend the reward to buy a house and lot for my family. :)
I'm sure many of you who were born in the early '70s are familiar with Skylab. Care to share? :)

The best things at Kissimmee
This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Kissimmee Tourism. All opinions are 100% mine.
I grew up dreaming of the best things in life – having a complete family, a nice comfortable home, nice clothes, a prominent school, and travel to beautiful places I have not set foot in. I did not experience any of those when I was a kid except being raised by a loving grandmother, supportive uncle and hardworking mom, who hardly send me and my sister to school. Well, I may not have the material possessions until now, but I think I was able to fulfill some of my childhood dreams like finishing school and have a complete set of family whom I am raising now with the help of my loving husband.
One dream that I still want to realize is to travel in beautiful places, this time with my family in tow. Have you seen Disney World in Florida lately? That’s one of the places my family want to go to in the future. We are looking forward to a Kissimmee vacation and stay at Celebration Suites at Old Town, where the place is affordable and family friendly!
While in Kissimmee we will be spending a lot of our bonding time visiting theme parks such as the Disney's Holywood Studios where we can experience Hogwarts with Harry Potter or swing above the streets with Spider-Man.We can have a dip into the beautiful beaches and picknicking in parks. Ah, I can't wait for it to happen. My husband, who is the adventurous type can try airboat rides, zip-lining, hiking and horseback riding. The kids and I can later join him biking and bird watching.
I know this plan is not going to happen in the near future, but at least we have created an itinerary ahead of time, right? I'm sure a lot of mommies especially here in the Philippines are also looking forward to bring their loved ones to Kissimmee for a grand vacation. You can check out the links in my post and see the breath-taking places in Florida.

ParenTIN Talk Series 3 (My first blogger event)
I attended my first blogger event last Saturday and it feels like the old days when I was covering health events. The only difference is that I don't feel the pressure of meeting any deadlines. I was there to meet my blogger friends and of course learn new things especially that the third ParenTIN Talk Series is focused on "Guide to Investing in Your Child's Future".
I was in a hurry to get to St. Luke's Medical Center, Global City on time that I forgot to bring my cellphone and camera (or my mini tape recorder) -- gadgets that were usually on my work bag no matter what the occasion is. But last Saturday's occasion was different. Although I was present at the event I don't feel the urge to write or take down notes maybe because I was expecting some handouts or press kits to be distributed by organizers to bloggers (just like what organizers do when they set up a press conference). I kinda miss that part (pampered feeling) last Saturday.
But with or without handouts I'll be attending similar events in the future but make sure I bring the proper gadgets with me.
And yes I'm happy that I was able to see Marce Peh and Techa again and meet for the first time Marce Chris, Jes and Norz. I also met and chat briefly with Jingke. Hope to see you lovely mommies in the next event for bloggers.
Meanwhile, here are some photos of the event which Norz shared with me and Jes. Thanks sis!

Mommy and Mumay
My daughter was busy chatting with her FB friends when I requested her to pose for this shot.
This is supposed to be an entry for Mommy Moments. It's not a wacky pose I know. This is just one of the series of photos that I took the other day including one "wacky" shot. I uploaded the photos already but decided to delete it because I don't want the young lady to get mad at me for posting the same without her approval (she's at her Dad's office now). Anyway, I'm sharing another picture of us (pardon the oily skin and uncombed hair ;-).
Looking forward to a stress-free Saturday and Sunday. Hope you enjoy the long weekend with your family. We are going to attend Parentin tv event tomorrow afternoon. Hope to see other mommies there. I'm excited! :)
Happy weekend everyone!

Wi-fi connection
Internet connection minus dangling wires seems cool. My husband is planning to switch to wi-fi connection at home for a change. Once wi-fi enabled, the kids can now use the laptop even when they are in the bedroom. Technology really makes our lives a lot easier these days. I imagine when we used to buy pre-paid cards just to have Internet connection at home. Internet was very vital to my former job. I need to be online most of the time for research and when sending my article to our office in Manila. Pre-paid and dial-up sometimes took a lot of my time to get connected. Prepaid cards lapsed before you know it. Dial-up sometimes are slower to give you connection and it takes a long time to upload data.
A lot of local telephone companies nowadays provide the fastest Internet connection. And then there are Internet satellite that offer wild blue high speed internet that requires zero down payment and free installation. I wonder if the latter is already available in the Philippines. I read from somewhere that WildBlue is least expensive among its league and has a lot of features to offer to clients. If similar Internet services will be made available locally, I'm sure many Internet uses especially those in the provinces will leave their dial-up connection behind and switch to wi-fi Internet.

Dengue vaccine and Tawa-tawa herb
Are part of the potential strategies of the Department of Health to fight dengue.
The vaccine, according to a DOH statement, should cover all four dengue strains (Type 1, 2, 3, 4). One type could give you a life-long protection against the same strain, but not from the other remaining three. This means that a person could get all four types of the dengue virus in his lifetime.
Experts are also studying if genetic modification of the Aedes mosquito, the species responsible for the spread of dengue cases, will render it less active in biting unsuspecting victims.
At the same time, they are not discounting the possibility of "Tawa-tawa”, a local herb, to cure or improve the condition of dengue patient. The boiled concoction is said to increase the platelet count of a person with dengue fever. Low platelet count is one of the danger or deadly signs of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF).
While health experts are studying the potential of these strategies, they are again reminding the public about the basic information to prevent dengue:

An accomplished woman, mother and wife.
9. Is it easy for you to share your true self in your blog or are you more comfortable writing posts about other people or events?
To be honest, I had difficulty expressing myself when I talk about myself or my family. It is always easy for me to tell the story of someone else...
10. If you had the choice to sit and read or talk on the phone, which would you do and why?
Sometimes I prefer to be alone, but I also enjoy talking with friends on the phone.
I'm done with the tag. I had fun! If you like this award then you can grab it and share with your friends too.
Have a great weekend everyone!
