LP: Linis (Clean)

9 friendly remarks

Health watch: FLOOD

3 friendly remarks
Typhoon Ondoy like any other natural disasters that hit our country had left us with unforgettable and painful experiences. But there are valuable lessons we should remember from all of them...lessons to keep us all going...

...The destruction of lives and livelihood is usually caused by lack of preparedness - with or without calamity. The following are the things each family should prepare for before calamity happens.

Tips to observe with (or without) an impending typhoon.
  • Dispose your garbage properly so it won't clog the drainage and become the source of infection.
  • Make sure that power lines are stable or firmly connected; shut down the main power if necessary.
  • Boil your drinking water for two minutes or more; save sterilized water.
  • Store foods that are not easy to perish.
  • Complete vaccination for children.
  • Prepare a "first aid kit", fire extinguisher, flashlight or candle, and battery-operated radio.

In the event of an evacuation:
  • Listen only to reports and reminders coming from the proper authorities.
  • Calmly follow all the reminders during evacuation.
  • Be careful not to step on open manholes and street gutter.
  • Avoid the path near or leading to the river.
  • Using a rope, head to the part where the current is coming from. Never loose your grip on the rope.

Assistance for a fellow blogger's family

7 friendly remarks
Our fellow blogger Willa Stock, who is based in Canada now is requesting Good Samaritans to spare a penny for her relatives who are badly needing help here in the Philippines. She said in her post that her sister lost everything in the flood brought by typhoon Ondoy. Here's what she said on her entry.

"My family and relatives back in my home country, Philippines, is one of the many victims of killer typhoon,Ondoy, that attack 3 days ago. It was the worst typhoon record that hit the part of Luzon. Two days after not hearing anything from them, my sister sent me a text message today that they literally lost everything and no money to buy a food, there's no way for them to ask help from others because, they too are a victim.
I already send them some of my own, even my son Patrick is so willing to give them the money he got for his birthday. I am now asking my fellow bloggers if you can spare a penny out of your paypal account, credit card or debit card .I would appreciate it more than anything. It breaks my heart because living far away from them, this is the only thing I can do. I wish I could do more."
Maybe we can help her sister deal with her predicament now. You may drop at Willa's site if you wish to help her sister. Thank you.

More than the holes in our roof

4 friendly remarks

A little  girl is carried to safety through flood waters in  Manila.

People wait for rescue on the top of their submerged houses in Cainta of Rizal

People wait for rescue on a submerged bridge also in Cainta, Rizal

We have been sleeping in our living room since Saturday night and might still be the setup in a few more days until our roof is fixed. We were roused from sleep by the drizzle emanating from the small holes in our roof the morning typhoon Ondoy hit the National Capital Region and adjacent provinces. We are thankful that it's only holes that we are dealing with here. We still have a roof over our head unlike thousands of our kababayan left homeless by Ondoy? Its heart breaking to see people (on TV) scamper to their safety. At the makeshift evacuation centers people are crying begging for Good Samaritan to donate food and clothing, the immediate concern of evacuees especially for their youngster.

We were eating dinner then and saw this man crying for food. Hubby and I pause for a while. He said if only we can donate something for them to eat like canned goods. But we can't go out as we have no means of transportation to get to the site. Our motorcycle has yet to be registered so hubby would not be able to drive it to the national road. Maybe I can use my site to spread the words by urging people to donate for the flood victims. Word of advice: make sure that the foundation/organizations/individuals receiving donations in cash and in kind are legitimate ones. We would not want our hard earned money to put to waste or end up in the wrong hands.

When the actual calamity hits, you will be left only with your faith in God! No matter how strong you think you are, it will only be the mercy of God that will sustain you! (Source)

(To my online friends I haven't been able to visit your site because our DSL connection at home was temporarily cut off, it was restored Sunday morning but still working intermittently.)

Here's the latest addition to her collection of books.

Here are some of her drawings she made today.

She's a Michael Jackson fan no doubt...

GT: Things women can do that men cannot

12 friendly remarks

Niko, the beautiful mom behind Girls Talk, is asking another thought provoking question for women bloggers this week: What are the things women can do that men cannot?

I saw this piece from cosmopolitan.com which is very apt for today's theme. I thought I might share this with fellow GT girls.

Twenty-one things only chicks can do

1. Get pregnant
2. Fake it (maybe it refers to the big ‘O’)
3. Ask for directions
4. Look sexy while sipping fruity cocktails
5. Live longer
6. Have multiple ‘O’
7. Multitask
8. Get a new last name
9. Wear skirts
10. Get out of a speeding ticket
11. Become a cougar, not a dirty old man
12. Wing it on the dance floor...convincingly
13. Wear high-heels
14. Flirt with the bouncer
15. Blame it on PMS
16. Grow out our hair
17. Cover up a zit
18. Get aroused without the entire room knowing it
19. Wear a thong
20. Get a manicure
21. Make a longer list of our talents

Can men beat this list? I bet not. How about you what do you think are our edge over boys? Find out at Girls Talk.

Keep your kids' immune system strong

0 friendly remarks

I get paranoid at the slightest rash or bruise develop by my kids. I tried to shield them from insect bites by applying a lot of mosquito repellent on their skin. There were times I tried closing all our windows even at daytime to prevent smoke from running vehicles from coming in but, they still get sick. Even if they are vaccinated from the common diseases of children they still developed measles, chicken pox and flu. The best thing that I learned over the years is to make their immune system strong by giving them age-appropriate vitamins and provide them budget-friendly meal that include the staple rice, fish or meat, common variety of vegetables, bread and milk, and fruits in season. Also, children should be taught the importance of proper hygiene. Aside from knowing the things that will make your kids healthy maybe its time that we should know the current trend of infections in the country. Here's a quick read at  Yam's Files.

Listening to Papa Jack is habit forming

2 friendly remarks

Sorry may pagka-bakya ako ngayon pero I'm listening to Papa Jack's radio program over 90.70 Love Radio. Influence ko si hubby dito. Napangkinggan kasi niya minsan ang program ni Papa Jack sa bus while he was on his way home from work. The good-looking DJ gives advice and berate if necessary some pasaway na callers in a wacky manner. He holds two programs TLC (True love conversations) aired around 10 p.m. and Wild confessions 12 midnight 'til 2 a.m. TLC usually deals with relationship problems while Wild confessions gives listeners the chance to air their intimate experience. The caller has the option to reveal the details of his or her intimate moments. Papa Jack however discouraged young callers to go into the details. He would simply ask the caller if he or she feels sorry for what he did or what happened to him or her. And let them promise not to do the act again by making them recite a funny mantra like..."di ko na gagawin ang blah, blah...sumpa man...suman, palaman, batman, pacman...so on. LOLz

While this guy is gaining so many followers/listeners, the prudent cast doubt on his ability to give advise as the program allegedly touches sensitive discussion on sex that may affect or influence young listeners. Personally, I don't think Papa Jack's program is anchored towards that. I think his programs only serve as leeway to a much more important issue of sex education to the broader spectrum of reproductive health (e.g. contraceptive use).

One more thing, Papa Jack's program was able to bring to the fore a rape case involving a teenage girl who was molested not by one but two family members. He offered to help the girl to bring her case to the proper authorities. The segment generate public concern. Callers urged Papa Jack to help the poor girl. Haven't heard of of the case since then. But at least Papa Jack has done his part to let the girl talk and probably open up to the appropriate people...

Activities my kids enjoy on a rainy day

2 friendly remarks
My kids know exactly how to keep themselves busy during the rainy days. If I am to enumerate what those activities are then I would be answering Earth's question for her rainy day contest which goes something like this. "What fun actividies you do indoors or outdoors to make your rainy day fun?"

Well, here's what my kids do to while away the time. Depending on their mood on a particular rainy day, they either spend their time watching TV or DVD movie, play the computer, read books, listen to MJ or Lady Gaga, sometimes draw and last but not least eat. We rarely take a nap in the afternoon so me and hubby (if its a weekend) would join our kids in watching the latest DVD movie.

If you are interested to be part of Earth's online contest visit her site now for more details and see what's in store for you once you are picked as the lucky winner.

I heard Earth will be giving away day passes to Island Cove, an Island Cove Spa treatment, gift certificate at TGI Fridays, gimmick pass to Padis Point and facial treatment at Fucoidan. Hurry and join the fun. Contest end on Sept. 23 (Wednesday).
